When we talk about Maxim’s, many of you may think
about the legendary restaurant ‘Maxim’s de Paris’.
This time, we visited the luxurious hotel; ‘Hotel
Residence Maxim’s’ near the avenue des
Champs-Elysées. In fact, the owner of both the hotel
and the restaurant is Pierre Cardin, the
world famous designer. The hotel, opened in 1982,
was entirely designed by Pierre Cardin himself. As
you know, he is a multi-talented creator who designs
not only clothes but also furniture and everyday
items. Please discover ‘Hotel Residence Maxim’s’ and
its luxurious suites with us.(2007-05-19)

The hotel is located on 42 Avenue Gabriel in the 8th
district of Paris, near the Elysées Palace (French
President’s official residence) and the avenue des
Champs-Elysées. A doorman welcomes you at the entrance,
where you admire the golden logo of Maxim’s. The
first thing we saw in the entrance hall was a big
vivid green butterfly. It was, in fact, furniture
designed by Pierre Cardin. We could already feel the
difference from other hotels where we usually see
front desk at first. “It’s not an accident that the
hotel is called ‘residence’. It’s decorated not as a
hotel but as someone’s residence so that clients
feel at home. Many clients stay for more than one
month,” says Sergio, who guided us in the hotel. One
month stay in this luxurious residence near
Champs-Elysées, it’s like a dream for most of us,
isn’t it?

The entire top floor of the hotel is the Pierre
Cardin Suite, which was originally reserved for
Pierre Cardin’s personal use. All the rooms are
painted in vivid colors, in red, blue or turquoise
and decorated with contemporary furniture signed by
Pierre Cardin. From the windows you can admire an
extraordinary view of the most iconic sights of
Paris. The atmosphere there is definitely futuristic
and creative. It’s no wonder this suite is often
used for photo shoots for fashion magazines.

Deluxe Room, Junior Suite and Suite… Each room is
decorated in a different theme, so that you feel as
if your friend has invited you to his house. The
rooms are generously sized; even the smallest is 60
square meters (650 square feet). Modern furniture
designed by Pierre Cardin creates a very original
and attractive space like no other hotel in Paris.
Monsieur Cardin didn’t forget details like curtain
belts, either. Each curtain is tied with a ribbon of
a different style all hand-made by dressmakers.

All bathrooms are in marble, with original wall
painting. And you’ll have the privilege to use the
toilet signed by Pierre Cardin! The suites also have
spacious walk-in closets. And a mini-kitchen is
available in certain rooms; ideal for those who are
lucky enough to stay longer.

The most prestigious of all the 33 rooms of the
hotel is Sarah Bernhardt Suite. Sarah Bernhardt was
a great French actress of the late 19th and the
early 20th century. The suite houses exceptional Art
Nouveau furniture from Pierre Cardin’s private
collection.

|
Bed, wardrobe and nightstand… all the items we can
only find in the Decorative Art Museum! “What’s
amazing in this hotel is you can really touch and
use true museum pieces,” says Sergio. It’s a rare
experience to use a bed or nightstand that we
wouldn’t be allowed to touch if they were displayed
in a museum. It gives you a luxurious feeling and at
the same time, demands a respect for these beautiful
and historical objects.

You can also find splendid furniture
designed by Pierre Cardin in the landing and
the corridor. We even found the famous ‘Evolution’,
which we could admire only in art books
until then. In this hotel, art is never far
from you. Pierre Cardin sees and creates art
everywhere, in every moment of our lives.

The green bar is on the left side of the
entrance, and the red restaurant on the
right. Both of them are decorated by a
lacquered wall in graduated color, which
gives a fantastic atmosphere. Works by the
famous illustrator René Gruau are presented
in Art Nouveau style frames. And you will
appreciate the terrace in summer! |
 |
The red restaurant, ‘Atmosphere’, offers a
refined French cuisine. Appetizers from 13
to 25 €, main courses from 19 to 32 €, and
desserts from 10 to 12 €. Enjoy your lunch,
tea or dinner in an Art Nouveau setting.

We were very happy to visit this magnificent place
full of history and art. We all know Pierre Cardin
is an artist who has designed a large range of
objects from the geometrical clothes of 60s to the
modern furniture of 70s, to even slippers and
towels. Our visit to his Hotel Residence Maxim’s
reminded us of his visionary and inventive talent
once again. The Pierre Cardin Suite with its vivid
color and futuristic furniture, the Sarah Bernhardt
Suite of the Belle Epoch, the suite with Japanese
paintings…This hotel is a wonderful mixture of
tradition, modernism and many different styles, just
as Pierre Cardin himself, who has traveled all over
the world to connect with different cultures and
people. We recommend this hotel to those who love
Pierre Cardin’s works and Art Nouveau. To those who
simply love art!
