We visited a
very cozy apartment of Aurélie and Nicolas, a
married couple who are both school teachers. Let’s
take a look their French country style decoration
with many antique objects. (2007-09-06)

Antique-lovers, Aurélie and Nicolas go to Marché aux
puces (flea market) and rummage sales whenever they
have free time. Their apartment with pine furniture
and well-placed antiques is enveloped by a nostalgic
and warm atmosphere.
However, thanks to the bright white wall and
light-coloured floorings, it doesn’t look ‘dusty’ at
all. As we have a leaning toward simple and modern
styles these days, their old fashion style is rather
refreshing. |
 |
The bookshelf full of memories… |
 |
This café au lait bowl belonged to Aurélie’s grand
mother. It seems from 1930’s. |
|
These are the very first shoes of Nicolas with which
he walked for the first time. In France, many
mothers keep her child’s first pair of shoes. What a
lovely custom! |
 |
A rare collection of films for an old viewmaster
which Nicolas collected when he was small. You
insert a film and look inside, and then old Parisian
sceneries pop up like 3D! |
 |
|
 |
Aurélie’s favorite picture book. Her name written
down on the book reminds me of my childhood. |
 |
This stunningly beautiful insect collection belonged
to Aurélie’s grand father. |
|
Displaying the books with same covers is a novel way
to a beautiful decorating. |
 |
Aurélie’s latest find at Marché aux puces. This
delicate miniature kitchen was hand-made by a
grandpa for his grand child. |
 |
|
 |
Where did they get this chest of drawers with
hand-painted birds? Everyone thinks that it is
antique but actually, they found it in an ordinary
furniture shop. They have great taste even in new
furniture. |
 |
DVD players and stereo equipment that can give such
a cold impression to room are all hidden behind an
antique ladder. CDs and remotes are also put in
boxes with cute illustrations. |
|
|
 |
 |
In their bedroom, they hang old newspapers,
advertisement from magazines, posters and
postcards. Here are some more very French
ideas. |
|
 |
The lampshade in the living room was a gift from
Aurélie’s mother. It’s like a birdcage covered with
leaves. Very original! |
 |
How many ladders are there in this house?! They use
these ladders to decorate or hide things. Such a
great idea! |
|
If all toys were as cute as this rocking horse, we
wouldn’t mind if children didn’t put away their toys! |
 |
As school teachers, they also collect antique
teaching materials. This poster was used to memorize
vocabularies in the classroom. Lovely! |
 |
|
 |
Here is another poster from the school. ‘Don’t spit’,
‘Don’t suck your fingers’…hmmm, I guess French
students didn’t behave very well back then! |
 |
Antique baby dresses decorate the white wall over
the door. |
