There may not be very many people
who know who you are talking about at the mention of
Francisque Poulbot, but there will undoubtedly be a
large number of those who have found the
representative sketch
Les gosses de Poulbot (The Children of
Poulbot) on sale as a postcard in Montmartre. It is
well known that Poulbot, an artist active in the
1920s, captured the appearance of children playing
on Paris’s street corners. However, he also drew a
series of sketches that contain a message about the
unmerciful life of children during World War I. In
addition to these, the curent exhibiton will display
advertising posters he drew for Michelin, Pyrex,
department stores, etc. Incidentally, the movie for
which Poulbot drew his final poster,
La Cage aux Rossignols, was the original
version of The Chorus (2004).
