There’s not much of this year left. The city of Paris has begun to glitter radiantly from the annual Noël Illumination. Welcome to the 2007 edition of the Paris Christmas Feature! (2007-12-11)
*Since the dates and events can change with little or no notice, please be sure to check things ahead of time.
Galeries Lafayette
Period: November 2nd, 2007 – December 31st
Metro: Chaussee d'Antin Lafayette Lines 7 and 9, Opera Lines 3, 7, and 8
Printemps
Period: November 12th, 2007 – December 31st
Metro: Havre Caumartin Lines 3 and 9, Opera Lines 3, 7, and 8

The illumination, as well as the window displays, of two of Paris’s largest and most well-known department stores is definitely worth taking a look.

Avenue des Champs Elysees
Period: November 26th, 2007 – Mid-January 2008
Metro: Champs Elysees Clemenceau Lines 1 and 13, Franklin D. Roosevelt Lines 1, and 9, George V Line 1, Charles de Gaulle Etoile Lines 1, 2, and 6

If you're talking about the main attraction of Paris’s Illumination, the most beautiful street has to be the world-famous Champs Elysees, doesn’t it? This year they have changed every light over to LEDs, so they will shine even brighter than the lights have up until now. In addition, they can use up to 70% less electricity, so it's being reborn as a kinder, more environmentally sound Illumination. Four hundred trees along the road will be adorned with dazzling light.

Montaigne Avenue
Period: November 25th, 2007 – January 7th, 2008
Metro: Champs Elysees Clemenceau Lines 1 and 13
Near the Avenue des Champs Elysees is this chic avenue, lined with the boutiques of high-class brands, which will also shine with the lights of the Noel.

Place Vendôme, Rue de la Paix, Castiglione Avenue
Period: November 22nd, 2007 – January 7th, 2008
Metro: Opera Lines 3, 7, and 8, Tuileries Line 1, Concorde Lines 1, 8, and 12
Place Vendôme is often called the world’s most beautiful plaza. Cartier, Boucheron, Chopard, Fred, and even the Hotel Ritz can be found here. The area is like Paris’s treasure chest. And they will be turning on the lights a week earlier than last year.

Rue Lepic, Abbesses Station Vicinity
Period: December 1st, 2007 – Mid-January, 2008
Metro: Abbesses Line 12
You’ll find many cafes and shops that appeared in the film Amelie gathered on Montmartre’s Rue Lepic, all in an atmosphere of a small town. Then, in the area surrounding Abbesses Station, there are many, many fashionable boutiques and cafes around.

Montmartre
Period: December 1st, 2008 – January 31st, 2008
Metro: Abbesses Line 12
The hill of Montmartre, where the white walls of the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur rise up, also shines with the light of Christmas. Perhaps there are lights placed at the highest point in all of Paris.

Even if you can’t see the famous illumination, idly strolling through Paris at any time can make some lovely memories.

Paris’s Marché de Noël (Christmas Market)

The castle of Vaux le Vicomte, the beauty of which even Louis the 14th was jealous, also lights up with the Christmas Illumination. The street leading to the castle's entrance is lined with white fir trees, lit up as if the sun had fallen to the Earth. Then the inside of the castle is decorated so thoroughly you’ll think you’re in a land of dreams. And with the children's costume rental (€4) you’ll feel like you’ve returned to France’s Middle Ages! It’s really too bad they don’t any for the adults to use.

Marche de Noel Introductory Page

The place that probably puts the most effort into Christmas in France is the Alsace region. This season Strasbourg will be painted in the colors of Christmas, along with Colmar, Mulhouse, and each city throughout Alsace. In particular is Strasbourg’s Marche de Noel Christmas Market, which is filled with history considering this year will be the 437th time it has been held. There will of course be Christmas trees, as well as ornaments, other decorations, and items perfect for Christmas presents there. And because the TGV non-stop train connecting Paris and Strasbourg opened this year it's gotten even easier to get there. Walking under the night sky, or the shining illumination in front of the cathedral, while drinking some Vin Chaud (warmed wine) is just lovely.
